Creglingen Jewish Cemetery

%3Cb%3EGeneral%20Information%3C%2Fb%3E%3Cbr%2F%3E%3Cstrong%3EHistory%20of%20the%20house%3C%2Fstrong%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0ABadgasse%203%20was%20the%20living%20place%20of%20a%20Jewish%20family%20for%20more%20than%20200%20years%20since%201618.%20On%20July%2015%2C%201618%2C%20Simson%20zu%20Rein%C3%9Fbronn%20purchased%20the%20old%20three-story%20residential%20building%20and%20was%20allowed%20to%20become%20the%20first%20Jew%20to%20settle%20permanently%20in%20Creglingen.%20The%20building%20also%20housed%20the%20first%20school%20and%20prayer%20room%20of%20the%20Jewish%20community%20of%20Creglingen%20%28first%20documented%20in%201659%29.%20The%20old%20half-timbered%20house%20had%20to%20be%20demolished%20in%20the%20late%2019th%20century%20due%20to%20dilapidation.%20The%20new%20house%20was%20built%20in%201880%20as%20a%20stable%20building%20and%20grain%20and%20flour%20store%20by%20a%20local%20baker.%20The%20last%20Jewish%20owner%20was%20the%20horse%20dealer%20Hermann%20Stern%2C%20who%20took%20over%20half%20of%20the%20house%20in%201903%20and%20all%20of%20it%20in%201910.%20After%20his%20violent%20death%20in%20March%201933%20and%20the%20subsequent%20expulsion%20of%20Jewish%20families%20by%20the%20Nazi%20regime%2C%20Stern%27s%20son%20Emil%2C%20who%20was%20the%20last%20Jew%20to%20leave%20Creglingen%20in%201939%2C%20sold%20his%20father%27s%20inheritance%20to%20a%20Creglingen%20farming%20family%2C%20who%20used%20it%20as%20a%20stable%20and%20barn%20until%20their%20resettlement%20in%201998.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cstrong%3EConversion%20to%20a%20museum%3C%2Fstrong%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AIn%201998%2C%20American%20businessman%20Dr.%20Arthur%20Sinsheimer%20Obermayer%20-%20a%2012th-generation%20descendant%20of%20Simson%20-%20learned%20that%20the%20house%20was%20for%20sale.%20He%20developed%20the%20idea%20of%20establishing%20a%20Jewish%20museum%20on%20the%20site%20to%20commemorate%20Creglingen%27s%20former%20Jewish%20citizens%2C%20their%20lives%20and%20their%20contributions%20to%20society.%20His%20initiative%20and%20generous%20financial%20contribution%20made%20it%20possible%20to%20establish%20the%20Foundation%20Jewish%20Museum%20Creglingen%2C%20which%20bought%20and%20renovated%20the%20house%20and%20opened%20the%20Creglingen%20Jewish%20Museum%20in%202001%2C%20initially%20with%20themed%20temporary%20exhibitions.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0A%3Cstrong%3EEstablishment%20of%20the%20permanent%20exhibition%3C%2Fstrong%3E%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AAfter%20several%20years%20of%20conceptual%20and%20planning%20work%2C%20the%20Foundation%20was%20able%20to%20open%20the%20new%20permanent%20exhibition%20at%20the%20Jewish%20Museum%20Creglingen%20in%202004.%20The%20exhibition%20%22Roots%20and%20Destination%22%2C%20with%20its%20focus%20on%20cultural%20and%20social%20history%2C%20brings%20to%20life%20the%20Jewish%20history%20of%20two%20rural%20communities%20in%20the%20Tauber%20Valley%20from%20the%20beginning%20of%20the%2017th%20century%20until%201939.%20In%20three%20sections%2C%20the%20roots%20and%20characteristics%20of%20Jewish%20life%20in%20Creglingen%20and%20Archshofen%2C%20the%20paths%20and%20fates%20of%20the%20Jewish%20people%20and%20the%20survival%20of%20the%20memory%20of%20the%20common%20past%20are%20presented.%20A%20memorial%20book%20for%20the%20victims%20of%20the%20pogrom%20of%20March%2025%2C%201933%20vividly%20shows%20the%20effects%20of%20the%20National%20Socialist%20racial%20mania%20on%20the%20fates%20of%20individual%20people.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20Jewish%20Museum%20Creglingen%20is%20also%20a%20place%20of%20encounter.%20Cultural%20events%2C%20lectures%20and%20temporary%20exhibitions%20are%20intended%20to%20promote%20the%20dealing%20witrh%20the%20past%2C%20mutual%20understanding%20and%20reconciliation.%3Cbr%20%2F%3E%0D%0AThe%20museum%20is%20run%20exclusively%20by%20volunteers%20and%20is%20financed%20mainly%20by%20donations.
